ABOUT

We are a family-owned and operated construction company with over 50+ years experience in the industry. In addition to our specialization in commercial tenant improvement as general contractors, we also run our own custom millwork shop. This allows us to complete projects faster for our clients, while maintaining total control over the quality and customization of our work. Our combination of services and skills have helped countless clients get their businesses running sooner, in turn becoming more profitable, and often returning to us as clients for their next renovation or expansion.

OUR TEAM

Steven Thomas Construction was founded by Tom & Karen Lane in 1988. Our culture is based on that of a close-knit family. Our small group of key team members have provided over a hundred combined years of service with our group.

Tom & Karen Lane

Proprietors

Tom & Karen met in the 1980s shortly after the fall of disco. After marrying in 1987 and starting a family in 1988, Tom & Karen put their heads and collective skills together to found Steven Thomas Construction. At the time, Tom brought nearly 30 years of cabinet making & project management experience to the table, with Karen rounding out the tandem with extensive banking & accounting experience in addition to a degree in psychology from the University of British Columbia. The confluence of their abilities and experience has been a key factor in creating and maintaining organized systems that deliver time and time again for a growing list of returning clients.

John White

Shop Foreman

John White was employee number one for Tom & Karen, celebrating 30 years with the company in 2018. A natural athlete, John leans on his competitive nature daily when it comes to his commitment to accuracy and meeting deadlines. His approach to millwork is one that blends skill and efficiency and centres on getting the job done on schedule, allowing clients to get their businesses running and profitable as soon as possible. John regularly consults directly with a number of returning clients who appreciate his expertise and pragmatism towards delivering exceptional results.

Dave Gray

Senior Project Manager

Dave started his journey with Steven Thomas Construction assisting with cartage and general labour. Fast-forward nearly twenty years, and Dave has parlayed his drive, ambition, and organization into his role as one of the most established and competent project managers in the business. Skilled at millwork installation and general carpentry in addition to his abilities as a contractor and coordinator, Dave approaches each job with a hands-on attitude that no task is above any one person. He embodies a willingness to get involved in whatever is needed to move a project towards completion, consistently meeting and exceeding the expectations of our clients.

Bob Faulder

Senior Cabinet Maker

Bob's connection to Tom & Karen dates back to his early years as a cabinet making apprentice in Prince George, BC, where he developed his sense of humour and fun-loving personality alongside several of Karen's younger relatives. Upon moving to the lower mainland during the emergence of Pavel Bure as the heartbeat of the great Vancouver Canucks teams of the 1990s (Coincidence? We think not), Bob began his career as a millwork & finishing specialist with Steven Thomas Construction. After a brief hiatus from STC while starting up his own custom millwork shop, Bob rejoined Steven Thomas Construction to support our increased demand and growth nearly ten years ago. Bob possesses a broad array of trade knowledge and brings an extra-keen eye for detail to each project.

Michael Johnston

Millwork Installation & Project Management

Hailing from Ontario originally and previously having worked extensively as a cabinet maker, Michael has more recently brought his shop expertise to the areas of site carpentry and project management. Michael has worked with Steven Thomas Construction as a subtrade installer for just over 5 years, joining the company on a permanent basis more recently whilst taking on additional responsibility. Like Tom and Dave before him, Michael has learned the rare industry skill of managing subtrades while staying involved directly with the carpentry portion of a project. This ensures the most time & cost efficient result for the client while adding a layer of accountability from start to finish on each project that Michael takes on.

Craig Chwinn

Cartage & General Labour

Craig has worked with Steven Thomas Construction since 2017. Craig brings decades of experience of plumbing, glazing, and general labour to our team. Craig, or "Chwinny" as he is referred to more often by colleagues, brings a high attention to detail to  essential tasks from start to finish on each and every job. Craig ensures that millwork is transported safely from the shop to the site, that new floors are protected thoroughly, and that sites are kept as clean as possible to encourage overall organization and to guard the client's investment in their space. Craig's approach to the little things ensures that the big picture is realized fully with the intangible that his extra level of care for each job site provides.
